A routine cleaning and checkup does more than polish your teeth — it's the appointment most likely to catch a problem while it's still small and inexpensive to treat. A dental hygienist removes plaque and tartar buildup that brushing alone can't reach, especially along and below the gumline. The dentist's exam that follows checks for cavities, gum disease, and early signs of issues like enamel wear or oral cancer.
Bitewing X-rays catch cavities forming between teeth long before they'd be visible or symptomatic. Most insurance plans cover two cleanings a year, which lines up with how quickly plaque hardens back into tartar after a cleaning.
Skipping a cleaning doesn't just risk cavities — hardened tartar left in place is what eventually leads to the gum recession and bone loss seen in advanced periodontal disease. Catching it at the routine-checkup stage is far cheaper and far less invasive than treating it once it's advanced.
Pocket depths around each tooth are measured to catch early gum disease before it progresses.
Modern digital sensors use significantly less radiation than older film X-rays.
A visual and physical screening for early signs of oral cancer is part of every standard exam.
Fluoride treatments and sealants can often be applied the same day as your cleaning.
